They fought forest fires, built park structures, planted trees and did many other useful projects. Students can get the feel of turning out to morning exercise in the snow while under the supervision of a "kindly" army officer! The Mexican Cherry Pickers of Traverse City

Up to 30,000 Mexicans labored in the cherry orchards! For many workers the cherry harvest was the highlight of their hard working year. They called cherries "fruita de los suenos," the fruit of dreams. This video has rare film footage from 1926 to 1960 along with interviews with the Mexicans themselves. Will give students a first hand look at the tribulations of these important workers who provided a major contribution to Michigan agriculture. Bill Jamerson is a PBS video producer.
